If you are pregnant you understand how annoying acid reflux can become, what’s more it’s extremely difficult because there are a lot of limitations to what you can do to prevent acid reflux during pregnancy.
Most women tend to have acid reflux or heartburn symptoms while they’re pregnant for quite a few different reasons. One of the top reasons for heartburn during pregnancy is the increase in hormones in a women’s body while they are pregnant. The presence of these hormones result in a softening of the ligaments which function to keep the lower esophageal sphincter or LES closed. If the LES is not firmly closed the body has a tendency to let gastric acid, food and other heartburn causing materials reflux back to the esophagus and the throat, this is the primary cause of heartburn during pregnancy.
Another reason for pregnancy heartburn is the changes in the body and the fact that the development of the baby creates more pressure on the woman’s stomach. This new added pressure tends to force the stomach contents right into the LES and coincidentally up into the esophagus.
Whatever is causing your heartburn during pregnancy we all can agree that it is uncomfortable annoying and unhealthy.
There are a few different methods that pregnant women can use to lessen the discomfort brought on by heartburn. Here are some ideas that you can try:
Avoid food that triggers heartburn. Foods that have a tendency to increase the propensity for heartburn are things like chocolate, spicy foods, citrus-based fruit, mustard, tomatoes, fried foods, fatty foods and highly spiced or seasoned dishes. If you are experiencing heavy episodes of heartburn you may want to talk to a gastroenterologist about what foods are more appropriate for you to be eating during your pregnancy.
Get rid of drinks that have caffeine in them. If you’re pregnant you should not be having caffeine anyway and caffeinated beverages play a strong role in increasing heartburn so stay away from things like coffee, tea and soda.
Another no-brainer when it comes to being pregnant is the avoidance of alcoholic beverages. Many people do not understand the strong link that alcoholic beverages have with heartburn. Alcohol plays a strong role in increasing heartburn and short-circuiting the LES.
If possible eat multiple smaller meals rather than one large meal. There is already enough pressure on your stomach to begin with eating a large meal can really tend to fire up the heartburn.
Try to rest and relax for three hours after your last meal before going to bed you want to give your stomach time to digest the food before simply just laying down to go to bed.
When you are sleeping try to use pillows to elevate your upper body 6 to 8 inches off the surface of the bed this will have gravity working in your favor when it comes to sending the heartburn causing materials back down into your stomach.
You also need to be drinking more water when you’re pregnant which really helps with acid reflux. Try to drink water in between meals rather than with meals because filling your stomach with both food and water again had the added pressure to your stomach.
